Agra is a city located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh along the Yamuna River. It is located 378 kilometers to the west of Lucknow, the state capital, 206 kilometers to the south of New Delhi, 58 kilometers to the south of Mathura, and 125 kilometers to the north of Gwalior. The 24th most populous city in India is Agra, one of the most populated in Uttar Pradesh. The numerous Mughal-era structures of Agra, including the T.J. Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpr Sikr, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, make it a popular tourist destination. Agra is part of the tourism circuits for the Golden Triangle, which also includes Delhi and Jaipur, and the Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc, which also includes Varanasi and the state capital of Lucknow. The cultural region of Braj includes Agra. Agra has two distinct histories: the ancient city on the east, or left, bank of the Yamuna, which dates back so far as to be lost in the Krishna and Mahabharata legends, and the modern city, founded by Akbar in 1558 on the right bank of the river and known throughout the world as the city of the Taj. Only a few foundational remnants from ancient Agra can be seen now. Prior to the Muslim invasions of India, it was a significant location under several Hindu kings, but its past is hazy and of little historical significance. It was a, according to the 17th-century chronicler Abdhullah. When Mahmud attacked Agra, according to Masud Sa'd Salman, the Raja Japal reportedly surrendered after experiencing a nightmare. Mahmud yet continues to plunder the city.

Sultan Sikandar Lodi first constructed the Mariam-uz-Zamani Tomb at Sikandra as a Baradari in 1495.

During the rule of Sikandar Lodi, Agra's significant historical period began. Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the Afghan monarch of the Delhi Sultanate (reigned 1489–1517), renovated Agra and made it the center of governance in 1504–1505.Sikandar Lodhi created a commission that examined and studied both banks of the Yamuna from Delhi to Etawah before deciding on a location for the city on the left bank, or the east side of the river. Agra, which is located on the left bank of the Yamuna, developed into a sizable, prosperous city with a royal presence, officials, businesspeople, academics, theologians, and artists. The city rose to prominence as one of India's most significant centers of Islamic scholarship. The sultan established the town of Sikandra in the city's northern outskirts and constructed a red sandstone Baradari there in 1495. Jahangir later turned the structure into a tomb, and now it serves as the Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, Akbar's empress.

Sultan Ibrahim Lodi, who ruled from 1517 to 1526, succeeded the Sultan after his death in 1517. He controlled his sultanate from Agra until the First Battle of Panipat, fought in 1526, where he was murdered by Babur, the Mughal Emperor. Air pollution and sewage spills into the neighboring Yamuna river have severely harmed the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal, which is made of white marble, is becoming yellow and green as a result of the eighth-most polluted city in the world. The Taj Mahal is frequently covered in pollution and dust from automobiles and smokestacks as it borders the trash-strewn Yamuna river.

One of the world's most polluted rivers is the Yamuna.[76] After Delhi, Agra is the polluter of the River Yamuna that causes the most damage. The Taj Mahal has had a number of issues as a result of the river's pollution, including 'Attacks by Bugs and their Green Slime a terrible odor,[79], and corrosion of the Taj Mahal's base.As many as 90 drains, or nalas, can enter the river. Despite the municipality's claims that 40 of these drains have been stopped, the larger Bhairon, Mantola, and Balkeshwar nalas continue to release considerable amounts of untreated waste water without any restrictions.[Activists assert that contaminants are being dumped in the Yamuna riverbed between Itmad-ud-Daula and the Taj Mahal. Polythene, plastic waste, shoe factory leather scraps, and construction materials every one of them into the water.

The district of Agra has a forest cover on less than 7% of its land.Keetham Lake, popularly known as Sur Sarovar Bird refuge, is the only significant wildlife refuge in close proximity to Agra. Nearly 20 different types of resident and migratory birds frequent the lake. The Agra Bear Rescue Facility, India's first sanctuary for 'dancing' bears, is located within the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. The facility, run by Wildlife SOS, Free the Bears Fund, and others, has helped over 620 sloth bears recover after being used as "dancing bears" by a nomadic tribe known as the Kalandars, despite the fact that this practice has been forbidden since 1972. ..
