In Kerala, south India, houseboats are huge, leisurely-moving barges. They are a modified version of Kettuvallams, which were once used to transport rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port (Kettu means "tied with ropes" in Malayalam, and vallam means "boat"). Houseboats in Kerala were seen as practical modes of transportation. Thomas Vargheese built the first modern house boat in Kerala in Kottayam under the reign of Dr. Babu Paul IAS.
Kettuvallams are once again well-liked and serve as important tourist attractions.
A houseboat of this size measures roughly 60 to 70 feet (18 to 21 m) in length and 15 feet (4.6 m) in width in the middle. Wooden planks that are fastened together form the hull.
